Farmers in Lucknow region of northern India incur losses due to termites attack. They are damaging the crops on a daily basis by attacking the roots and drying up the plants.

Farmers in the Lucknow region of India's Uttar Pradesh state are facing huge losses as a huge army of termites has damaged their standing crops.

One farmer says that over the past five years he's been dealing with the problem of termites.

[Suresh Singh, Farmer]:
"We are very much disturbed by the termites. They destroy our crops by attacking the roots of the plants. And the plants dry up after the termites attack it."

Small and marginal farmers say they cannot afford to buy their own dusters, sprayers, and other kits for the application of pesticides in their small fields.

Others say they're angry state government officials are not doing more to help them get rid of the termites.

[Munni Yadav, Farmer]:
"In order to protect our crops from termites we provide moisture regularly to our crops. This is the only solution we have to save our crops. We do not have sufficient money to buy anti-termite chemicals. The government officials do not pay much attention to us."

Termites are also going after people's houses, as these pests attack wooden structures, paper and even clothes.
