Heavy rainfall has caused severe floods in parts of New South Wales on Friday. The Australian government is expecting to declare five natural disaster areas in the coming days.

On Friday, heavy rainfall continues in the Australian town of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales. Residents are bracing themselves for the Murrumbidgee River to rise to its peak on Sunday.

The Macquarie River near the town of Dubbo in New South Wales hit its peak on Friday, causing the closure of a bridge.

In Coonamble, locals are preparing for more flooding.

[Andrew Morley, Firefighter]:
"We are just pumping around down at one street into the other. Pumping over the levies to get rid of the localized water inside the levee bank."

Floodwaters have cut off roads and isolated farms. The weather bureau predicts more rain over the weekend.
