Police officials in India's Maharashtra state have seized arms and explosives at a Maoist rebel campsite on Tuesday. The Maoists managed to escape, leaving behind their belongings, arms and explosives.

Officials arrived after receiving information of Maoists camping in the village.

[Vivek Raj Singh, Superintendent of Police, Aurangabad]:
"Once we reached the location, the Maoists opened fire on us, in response to which we fired back at them. Eventually, the Maoists managed to escape, taking advantage of hills as their cover."

The seized arsenals include country made medium sized weapons, flashguns, and detonators.

Maoists have spread into rural pockets of 20 Indian states. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has declared them the nation's most serious internal security threat.
