Mount Bulusan volcano in southeastern Philippines erupted on Sunday, sending out hot ash to nearby towns. Nearly one thousand people fled their homes.

Clouds of smoke and ash covered roads and houses, damaging crops and contaminated rivers in the area.

According to the country's volcanology bureau, the Mount Bulusan volcano showed signs of activity after a few weeks of rest.

The bureau says the sudden bursts of ashes and tremors are a common occurrence of a reactivating volcano and should be expected to continue for a few weeks to come.

[Ed Laguerta, Volcanologist]:
"The volcano became quiet after Bulusan's ash explosion activity at around 7:22 a.m. But then its seismic activity is moderately high. We recorded over 32 volcanic quakes."

The bureau is stressing residents to stay outside the two-and-half-mile danger zone to avoid harmful effects of the ash and smoke.

Mount Bulusan is one of the active volcanoes in the Philippines, located nearly 150 miles southeast of Manila.

The volcano suddenly became active on November 6th after it released a jet of ash column followed by four consecutive tremors.

The Philippines is located within the "Pacific ring of fire," a region with the world's largest number of historically active volcanoes.
