This video will demonstrate the need for computational and experimental research to enable the design and erection of wind towers that are sufficiently tall to take advantage of the faster and sustained winds that exist further from the earth’s surface. The most effective design for these taller towers involves the use of post-tensioned precast concrete segments for at least the lower half of these tall wind towers. The critical element in the design of these wind towers are the shear demands and slip capacities along the contact surfaces between these precast segments. Funding of the work proposed in this video will enable numerical modeling and experimental studies that are needed to further the design of tall wind towers.
