Plans for airports and air strips have been unveiled for India's Andaman and Nicobar islands. Here's more.

The Andaman and Nicobar Command, or ANC, unveiled plans to create airports and airstrips on Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

[B. K. Joshi, Chief of Command, ANC]:
"That the four air strips that we have at Port Blair you have landed in, you have seen that it is a full-length, full-fledged runway capable of operating all kinds of aircraft. The only limitations being that because of the Joggers Hill height on the eastern side it is currently a unidirectional airstrip which has its own limitations, and therefore our intention is to make it a bi-directional air field."

The ANC was created in 2001 for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Coast Guard operate jointly.

Two other airports, the Shibpur in the north and Campbell Bay Airport in the south are slated for development.

Andaman and Nicobar consist of 572 islands. This Union Territory of India is stretched over a distance of more than 435 miles from north to south with 36 inhabited islands.
