Residents of Honduras and Guatemala are relieved after being spared from the brunt of Tropical Storm Matthew.

The storm was losing force Saturday afternoon as it swept over the two countries, dumping rain but leaving less damage than anticipated.

Firefighters in Honduras monitored the river levels and watched for signs of flash floods.

[Unidentified Firefighter]:
"We're now waiting the swollen river because it's up to the trees and the water is pulling with force. That's why we're here to see how high it goes, to inform people so they can be alert and leave if necessary."

In Guatemala, the storm drenched farms as the government told residents near the rivers to move inland.

[Victor Pur Monterroso, Tourist Guide]:
"Thank God we had no consequences here of the Dulce River being affected. The storm that passed affected (the area) over by the River Montagua and the banana farms were affected. I think those people need help because they're cut off."

Some enjoyed the fast-moving rivers, but there were warnings that the risk of mudslides is high.
