Wayne Rooney shrugged off lurid headlines about his private life to score the opening goal in England's 3-1 victory over Switzerland.

The Manchester United striker played 79 minutes of the Euro 2012 qualifier in Basel.

The 24-year-old was the subject of weekend newspaper claims that he had sex with a prostitute while his wife Coleen was pregnant with their first child.

But he appeared unaffected by the allegations as he netted a close range effort to break the deadlock in the first half.

Rooney had appeared grim-faced as he jetted off with the rest of the team from Luton Airport on Monday and has so far made no comment about the claims.

England manager Fabio Capello insisted Rooney remained focused ahead of tonight's match.

The 64-year-old Italian said: "He told me he is ready to play, he wants to play and I'm sure that he will play."

Asked about the impact on the team ahead of the match, Capello said: "We are focused on the game, not about the private lives of the players."

Second half goals from Adam Johnson and Darren Bent secured England's second successive win in the qualifying campaign.
