A wildfire that broke out Saturday night on Greece's Evia island appears to be dying down on Sunday.

Firefighters battled through the night to contain the blaze.

Fires near Aetos village on the southern part of the island no longer threaten houses.

More than 100 firefighters and 34 vehicles were involved in the overnight effort, while volunteers and residents battled the blaze with garden hoses and buckets.

High winds prevented planes and helicopters from participating.

Fire officials have said four abandoned farm houses were damaged by fire, but there have been no reports of injuries.

Greece often falls victim to wildfires during the summer months, with high temperatures and powerful winds as contributing factors.

In 2007, at least 67 people died in fires that raged through villages in the southern Peloponnese region.

In recent days Greece has experienced strong north winds; ideal conditions for the weekend blaze.
