On Monday, heavy rain and flooding in China's northeast has left at least 100 dead or missing and destroyed tens of thousands of houses.

Floodgates at the Fengman dam were opened on Monday morning to release water, which was swelling the reservoir on the upper reaches of the Songhua River in Jilin Province.

Flooding washed 3,000 barrels containing chemicals and 4,000 more empty ones into the Songhua River in Jilin City last Thursday.

The flood also destroyed water pipelines across Tonghua City, leaving 300-thousand people without tap water.

Floods have collapsed about 160,000 houses in Jilin, forced the evacuation of some 590,000 people and caused an estimated loss of up to $1.35 billion U.S. dollars in the province.

At a dam near Fushun in neighboring Liaoning Province, debris from flash floods completely blocked the floodgates, causing water in the reservoir to swell.

Rains across large swathes of central and southern China have killed 928 people and left 477 missing this year aloneā€¦ causing around 26 billion U.S. dollars in damage.
