More than 800 domestic and foreign tourists looked over the demilitarized zone that divides North and South Korea on the last day of military drills held off the Korean peninsula.

The drills, called "Invincible Spirit", began last Sunday as a way to deter North Korea from war.

The drills involve more than 200 aircraft.

South Korean tourists at the Odusan Unification Observatory have divided opinions on the joint military exercises.

[Lee Sang-cheol]:
"I think North Korea has reacted too sensitively. It's not unusual to hold joint military drills. And there was a ship sinking incident. I do not think there will be any serious confrontation between North Korea and us. I do not feel uncomfortable."

Another man said the joint drills could discourage North Korea from provoking war.

[Lee Bo-myung]:
"I feel quite satisfied with the joint military drills. We need to threaten North Korea like this, then North Korea cannot try to provoke war."

The two Koreas are technically still at war and station about one million troops near their respective sides of the demilitarized zone.

The United States announced new sanctions on the North last week, including a freeze on the assets of Pyongyang's leaders, alleging the funds had been acquired through illicit activities.

Pyongyang warned that the drill had pitched the peninsula to the brink of war.
