Dev Patel has reassured his mum that he is not engaged to girlfriend Freida Pinto after she read rumours claiming her son had popped the question!

The actor, 20, met Freida on the set of Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. The pair later came out as a couple in 2009.

Speaking at the Last Airbender premiere in New York, Dev admitted that he had to set his family straight.

"I was like, 'Mum, I honestly didn't get engaged, trust me.' Nothing's happened. Everything is absolutely fine. I'm just shooting a film'", said the star.

The Last Airbender is the latest movie from Sixth Sense director M Night Shyamalan.

Based on a popular Nickledeon cartoon, the movie is a 3D action adventure about the Fire Nation launching a war against the other elements - Air, Water and Earth.

Dev said the movie is more mature than the animation:

"It is strange because the cartoons are amazing but obviously in the first season it's a lot more funny. It's a bit more black and white in the cartoon and a bit more blown up to me to make the kids laugh."

Meanwhile, it seems director M Night Shyamalan found the New York premiere of his latest movie a little daunting and compared it to walking down the aisle.

"A little bit like a bride on the wedding day. It should be like your day to celebrate but I am worried about will the florist come? Will everybody enjoy themselves?" the director said.

The Last Airbender is out in cinemas in August.
