The U.N. Security Council imposed a fourth round of sanctions on a defiant Iran on Wednesday.

The West suspect Iran’s nuclear development program is aimed at building atomic bombs.

The resolution passed by the 15-nation council, followed five months of negotiations between the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia.

China and Russia calls for full implementation of the new measures and urged Tehran to comply with international demands.

President Barack Obama says the sanctions will be vigorously enforced.

But Iran insists it will go ahead with the uranium enrichment, at the center of the dispute.

"No amount of pressure and mischief will be able to break our nation's determination to pursue and defend its legal and inalienable rights. Iran is one of the most powerful and stable countries in the region and has never bowed and will never bow to the hostile actions and pressures by these few powers and will continue to defend its rights.”

Brazil and Turkey, who voted against the sanction, are angry at the West's dismissal of an atomic fuel deal with Iran.

Lebanon, where the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah is in the government, abstained.

The four Western powers had wanted much tougher measures -- some targeting Iran's energy sector -- but Beijing and Moscow succeeded in diluting the steps outlined in the 10-page resolution.

[Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador]: (female, English)
"The resolution we passed today offers Iran a clear path toward the immediate suspension of these sanctions. The best way is also the easiest one. Iran must fulfill its international obligations, suspend its enrichment-related reprocessing and heavy water-related activities and cooperate fully with the IAEA."
