On Sunday, Austria's incumbent president, Heinz Fischer, enjoyed his second victory in winning the presidential election. Fischer’s popularity was reflected in his large margin victory of a three quarter majority.

Austria's incumbent president and a pro-European Social Democrat, Heinz Fischer, won the election on Sunday.

Fischer was voted for by a large majority of 79 per cent, according to first official results.

This will be Fischer’s second six-year term in office.

Fischer’s main challenger from the xenophobic Freedom Party, Barbara Rosenkranz, came in second with 16 per cent of the votes.

From the Christian Party of Austria, Rudolf Gehring, came in third with 5 per cent.

Fischer spoke to a cheering crowd in his election hub in Vienna's Museum Quarters.

Critics have seen Fischer as a timid character who avoids conflict and controversy.

However, Fischer has become the most trusted and popular politician in Austria since he was elected President for his first term in 2004.

The polls had predicted Fischer’s large margin victory.
