The torrential rainfall caused a series of mudslides in Lima on Saturday, leaving hundreds of families without a home and forcing thousands to evacuate.

Residents used shovels, buckets and wheelbarrows to remove the mud that came down the mountainside. No deaths or injuries were reported.

According to reports, some 1,300 homes were damaged by the mudslides with 150 of those homes declared a total loss.

[Miguel Saldana, District Mayor]:
"There are 150 that are seriously damaged. Throughout the zone, there are a lot more than 150 homes, something like 1,300 but there are 150
that are worse off."

Police and civil defense workers were called in to rescue 100 people who were trapped in the Aposento Alto evangelical church.
