Excerpts from an interview with author David Hearne and coin Expert Mike Fuljenz regarding the use of real people in fictional books. Mike Fuljenz, a numismatist for Universal Coin & Bullion, became the fictional numismatist in the book Hulagu’s Web – The Presidential Pursuit of Senator Katherine Laforge. Hearne picked Fuljenz because he represented the consummate professional that was needed for the novel; a knowledgeable, honest, likable and interestingly unique numismatist. Hearne’s knowledge of Fuljenz came from his own experience where he had sought Mike Fuljenz’s advice on a collection of Hulagu coins. This was the same type of coin described in the book Hulagu’s Web. The novel is a political thriller that pits a woman running for the Presidency against powers that want her dead.
