Hardly known today, banjoist and bandleader Carhart was trained by Elmer Snowden, and is best remembered for his activities in Europe in the late '20s, making him one of the earlier American bandleaders to bring swinging music to the European continent. He worked his way overseas performing on ocean liners, and obviously knew how to choose excellent musicians, including reedman Bud Freeman and drummer Dave Tough. In 1927 George Carhart's New Yorkers (not to be mistaken for other, homonymous bands) recorded for the German Homocord and Tri-Ergon labels. During this European period he switched to guitar. Later Carhart action in the '30s included leading bands on cruise ships, but of his later career no information is available. He made fabulous genuine jazz record like the one presented here, but unfortunately they enjoyed little success among European buyers, and today he is among the obscurest, yet outstanding jazzmen. This disc was waxed in 1928.
