Genuine John - Genuine John (1970) Rhythm & Blues, Psychedelic Rock

Comprising of veteran session musicians, this release carries a soul, funk feel with a touch of jazz fusion. A hidden gem.

Despite this album’s eye-catching album jacket, it seems to be little-known obscurity buried in the vast Capitol Records 1970’s catalogue. There also is very little information to be culled online. Anyway, what we have here is a soulful brass influenced pop rock set with a few instrumentals thrown in for good measure. “Thought She Was A Good Woman” is a rocking affair with funky baselines, nice brass and emotive vocals. Side 1 ends on a brass rocker “I Want Your Love”, which has helpings of harmonica. Side 2 opens with “I Think You Love Him”, another brass rocker which displays pop and commercial intentions – would probably have been the single pick. The slow soulful “Puppy Dog Song” sounds like it’s going to be lame, however it’s a good interlude with excellent vocal work. Among the three instrumentals, “Inside Out” is the best with its slight psychedelic effects in parts.recorddigger Dec 13 2020
