"Eichbaum" is your basic underground train station located between Essen and Mülheim deep in the heart of Germany. Almost 6 months ahead of the start of Ruhr 2010, Germany's next Capital of Culure - this underground station is being transformed into an opera house. Paying visitors, locals and passengers are all integrated into the opera, along with sounds of the nearby autobahn and the subway operations. It's part of the artists' creative expression of the structural problems in the region. 30 years ago, "Eichbaum" was designated to become a modern day traffic hub. Nowadys, all that's left of that vision is vandalism and robberies. It's hoped the opera will breathe new life into the station. ARTS.21 reports.
