The United States and India have signed a landmark 10-year defence framework, marking a significant shift in strategic cooperation. The deal was formalised in Kuala Lumpur during a meeting between U.S. representative Pete Hegseth and Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
The agreement comes at a sensitive time, following President Trump’s unsuccessful talks with China’s Xi Jinping and ongoing strain over U.S. tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil. Leaders from both sides say the pact opens a “new chapter” in bilateral defence ties, signalling efforts to stabilise relations amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.
Rajnath Singh added that the strengthened India–US partnership will also boost defence coordination with ASEAN under India’s Act East Policy.
