New Delhi defies firecracker ban, tops global rankings as pollution levels soar

New Delhi plummets into a thick haze of toxic air on Nov. 1, 2024 as the city topped global pollution rankings, a day after Diwali revellers flouted firecracker bans and sent air quality plummeting. Thick smog wreathed the Indian capital, shrouding the presidential palace in the central district and the surrounding gardens popular with joggers and cyclists, after celebrations on October 31. The air quality index stood at 348, said Swiss firm IQ Air, taking pollution into the hazardous category, pushing Delhi to the top of a real-time list as the world's most polluted city.
