Gambit: The Real Reason Channing Tatum's Movie Never Happened
Gambit is one of the most popular mutants in the Marvel Universe, both for his solo adventures in the comics and for his history within the X-Men.
In cinema, after a poor adaptation in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was played by Taylor Kitsch, actor Channing Tatum tried for years to star in a solo Gambit film.
Recently, the actor finally got his chance in Deadpool & Wolverine. Thanks to the multiverse, Channing Tatum was able to bring Gambit to life, becoming one of the highlights of the film.
However, this return led fans to question why the hero's film never got off the ground. After all, Channing Tatum tried for FIVE years to make the movie happen.
Between 2014 and 2019, when Fox was sold to Disney killing the Gambit film, no less than 3 directors were involved with the film: Rupert Wyatt, Gore Verbinski and Doug Liman.
Furthermore, at least two others turned down the offer right away: Edgar Wright and Steven Soderbergh. And every time the film received a no or a director leaving the project, the answer was always that the script wasn't good.
The film never happened because Fox was never able to develop a script capable of securing a director in production. Eventually everyone passed on the opportunity until it was too late.
