Datuk Seri Najib Razak's lead defence counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, clarified that the former prime minister's apology for the 1MDB scandal was not made to influence the court's decision in the RM2.28bil 1MDB trial.

He said that Najib's expression of regret carried no admission of guilt and was made as the debacle occurred under his leadership.
