Non-Muslim organisations part of Syariah law discussions, says Deputy Minister

The government has engaged both Muslim and non-Muslim communities to foster understanding of the impending reforms to Syariah law in Malaysia, says the Deputy Religious Affairs Minister.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan, informed the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Oct 17) that the Special Committee Examining the Competencies of State Legislative Assemblies in enacting Syariah laws had conducted extensive engagement sessions that focused on explaining the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Amendment) Bill (RUU355), particularly addressing overlaps and conflicting jurisdictions.

Dr. Zulkifli also noted that RUU 355 is expected to be tabled in Parliament soon, along with the Syariah Court Bill (Federal Territories), aimed at strengthening the Syariah Courts.
