The Peregrine Falcon, known to scientists as Falco peregrinus, is a pretty amazing bird. These falcons are famous for being the fastest animals on Earth when they dive. They can reach speeds of over 320 km/h! That's faster than most cars on the motorway.
These birds live all over the world, from the Arctic to the tropics. They're medium-sized birds of prey, about the size of a crow. Peregrines have dark grey feathers on top and lighter, striped feathers underneath. Their wingspan can be up to 120 cm wide.
Peregrine Falcons eat other birds, which they catch in mid-air. They spot their prey from high up, then dive down at incredible speeds to catch it. These birds often live near cliffs or tall buildings in cities, where they can nest and hunt easily.
In the past, Peregrine Falcons were in danger because of pesticides. But thanks to conservation efforts, their numbers have gone up. Now, you might even spot one in a big city!
