At UNGA, Malaysia FM promotes 'peaceful coexistence' in South China Sea
Malaysia's foreign minister embraced a conciliatory tone on the South China Sea while addressing the United Nations General Assembly Saturday, September 28.
China claims almost the entire South China Sea, including the atoll, coveted for its bountiful fish stocks and stunning turquoise lagoon, despite overlapping claims in the busy waterway by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
In speaking to the 79th General Assembly, Malaysian Foreign Minister, Mohamad Hasan, said the region, "must collectively pursue a different vision.... I call upon all countries to abide by the UN clause in the conduct of maritime governance. We must prioritize peaceful coexistence."
