Basedow's disease has many synonyms: Graves' disease, diffuse toxic goiter, Flajani disease, Perry's disease, hyperthyroidism.
The main characteristic of Graves' disease is an increase in the activity and volume of the thyroid gland due to iodine deficiency in the body.
Hyperthyroidism is the second most common thyroid disease, which can be transmitted by heredity through the female line: from grandmother to granddaughter.
The occurrence of Graves' disease is associated with the appearance of defects in the functioning of the immune system, due to which an abnormal form of protein is produced, which harms the thyroid gland.
According to statistics, out of 100 people, 1 suffers from Graves' disease, but most often these are young women.
Causes of Basedow's disease may include: long-term chronic infections in the body, hereditary predisposition, viral infections, radioactive iodine, chronic tonsillitis, diabetes, Addison's disease, vitiligo, hypoparathyroidism.
Common signs of diffuse toxic goiter are: vomiting, nausea, enlarged thyroid gland.
At the early stage of hyperthyroidism, the following symptoms may be observed: sleep disturbances, trembling fingers, palpitations, increased sweating, mood swings, poor heat tolerance, weight loss.
Characteristic of Graves' disease are changes at the eye level: exophthalmos, a feeling of sand in the eyes, a pronounced shine in the eyes.
Dangerous changes are observed at the level of the cardiovascular system: heart rhythm disturbances, increased blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, angina.
Disturbances are also observed at the level of the nervous system, liver and digestive tract. Also, diffuse toxic goiter may be characterized by infertility and impotence.
Basedow's disease has 3 stages: mild, moderate and severe.
Diagnosis of diffuse toxic goiter is made on the basis of: clinical picture, ultrasound examination, palpation of the thyroid gland, analysis of the concentration of thyroid hormones in the blood.
Treatment of Graves' disease includes taking medications (antithyroid drugs): propicil, thiamazole, carbimizole.
If treatment is ineffective, surgery or treatment with radioactive iodine is used.
Prevention of diffuse toxic goiter includes: lifestyle control, health monitoring, timely treatment of chronic and viral infections, elimination of stress and anxiety.
