In 1943, at the age of 18, she was signed to MGM, for which she made a series of films in the 1940s. She reached the peak of her career as the protagonist alongside John Garfield in Body and Soul. Her marriage to production designer Cedric Gibbons caused gossip in 1944: she was nineteen, he was 51. The marriage lasted until 1960, when the production designer died. Hazel Brooks later married Rex Ross, a surgeon and founder of the Non-invasive Vascular Clinic at Hollywood Hospital, who died in 1999. Hazel Brooks died in Bel Air in 2002 at the age of 78.
