Calls to reinstate Glasgow’s public fireworks displays

As Glasgow’s Bonfire’s Night has been cancelled for another year there are public calls to reinstate them arguing it’s safer to have an organised event as it reduces misuse.

This comes after the city council ordered a firework control zone in part of the Southside meaning anyone who uses them there can face a fine or jail time.

The Scottish Greens are calling for Glasgow Life to reconsider their decision to cancel the annual event saying the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service supports it.

On the official web page their fire service states it is always safer to attend an organised bonfire or firework display than hosting one yourself.

There has not been a public firework display in Glasgow since 2019 meaning citizens have had to travel outwith the city.

Glasgow Life have said cancelling the event all together is more environmentally friendly and causes less disruptions to locals.

It is being further argued that public displays mean less antisocial behaviour as they can be properly risk-assessed.
