Decision to be made on whether Glasgow is the host of Commonwealth Games 2026

Glasgow is expected to host the next Commonwealth Games in 2026, with the deadline to formally accept or decline the offer looming.

The event was originally due to take place in the Australian state of Victoria, however, the country withdrew because of rising costs.

Talks have been underway with the Common Wealth Games Scotland, discussing a scaled back version of events with the federation capital pledging to contribute £100 million.

The Scottish Government has warned no public funds will handed over and that hosting the games would carry a reputation risk and financial risk, though the Scottish body insists it would not need tax payer money.

While a final decision is to be made in the coming weeks, talks continue.

The challenge is that what is being proposed is a smaller version of the 2014 games hosted here, with fewer sports over fewer sites, a model not previously done.

The government is concerned over whether it can be achieved or not, and whether it will harm their strong reputation achieved from their 2014 go.
