The IDF highlighted that Al-Shaer had been involved in numerous attacks against Israel. His death is expected to deal a major blow to Hezbollah’s operational capabilities, particularly their ability to launch attacks from southern Lebanon. The IDF has indicated that Al-Shaer’s elimination will disrupt the Iran-backed group’s militant activities against Israel.
Hezbollah’s Retaliation
In response to Al-Shaer’s death, Hezbollah fired “dozens” of Katyusha rockets and several drones at two locations in northern Israel. The IDF reported that these retaliatory strikes caused no casualties. Some of the incoming projectiles were intercepted, while others landed in open areas without causing damage.
Israeli Response
The Israeli military quickly retaliated by targeting Hezbollah launch sites in the Mansouri and At Tiri areas. These sites were reportedly used in the recent rocket and drone attacks. Earlier in the day, the Israeli Air Force also struck a Hezbollah military structure in the village of Rachaf in the Nabatieh governorate of southern Lebanon. This airstrike resulted in 12 people being injured, according to Lebanon’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center.
Historical Context
This incident comes on the heels of the recent assassination of Fu’ad Shukr, a high-ranking Hezbollah official, in a drone strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Shukr’s death marked the highest-profile killing of a Hezbollah leader since Mustafa Badreddine was killed in Syria in 2016.
