Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway: An Indian Mother's Fight for Justice
"Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway" is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language legal drama film inspired by the real-life story of Sagarika Chakraborty, an Indian immigrant mother whose children were taken away by Norwegian authorities in 2011. The film follows Debika Chatterjee, played by Rani Mukerji, as she battles the Norwegian child welfare system and legal machinery to regain custody of her children.
Debika, her husband Aniruddha, and their two children Shubh and Suchi live in Stavanger, Norway. During a routine visit, Norwegian Child Welfare Services (Barnevernet) removes the children from their home, claiming the parents are unfit. Debika is accused of improper parenting practices like hand-feeding her children and co-sleeping.
Determined to reunite with her kids, Debika takes legal action against the Norwegian government. She learns that the child welfare system is exploiting immigrant families. With the help of her lawyer Daniel Singh Ciupek (Jim Sarbh), Debika fights through the courts in Norway and India.
The film also stars Anirban Bhattacharya as Aniruddha and Neena Gupta as Vasudha Kamat, a character based on former Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. It was directed by Ashima Chibber and released in theaters on March 17, 2023.
"Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway" is a powerful story of a mother's unwavering love and her relentless battle against an unjust system. It sheds light on the real-life struggles of immigrant families and the need for cultural sensitivity in child welfare practices.
