Thailand steps up efforts to contain spread of highly transmissible mpox virus
Thailand has stepped up surveillance and preventive measures to contain the spread of the mpox virus after confirming its first case of the highly transmissible Clade 1b strain of the virus.
The infected person is a 66-year-old European man who previously traveled to Africa before entering the Southeast Asian country last week. This is the first confirmed case of Clade 1b in Asia.
According to the Department of Disease Control (DDC) of Thailand, the man has been quarantined in a hospital.
The infected person arrived in Thailand on August 14 on a connecting flight from the Middle East, said an official with the DDC, adding that officials have dispatched a team to trace and monitor 43 individuals who had close contact with him.
Apart from Thailand, other countries in Asia have also reported cases this month. Pakistan and the Philippines have each announced one case of the mild Clade II variant.
