INTERVIEW WITH INTERNATIONAL BOXING ASSOCIATION CEO AND SECRETARY GENERAL CHRIS ROBERTS

"The boxer has spent four years from one Olympic cycle to another. You know, to meet a dream. One dream, of course, to win the world championships and another dream to win the Olympic Games, of course, has been taken away."

"There was a concern raised by both coaches and boxers. Indeed, our medical committee at the time had also had concerns. And so it was at that point that the chair of the IBA Medical Committee intervened and said, look, we need apply these tests correctly and we go from there. So this had been applied and of course, we had the result which came out that both boxers were ineligible for our tournament. Quite a lengthy process. I don't know. It's been a while now. But of course, the end state of that is that these two boxers are not allowed to box with the IBA. So I find it remarkable how the IOC apply a different condition to this event."

“The testosterone is not a perfect test. Many women can have testosterone, which is in what would be called male levels and still be women and still compete as women. So, this panacea, this idea that suddenly you test, do one test for testosterone, and that sorts everything out. Not the case, I'm afraid. But each sport needs to deal with these issues. They know their sports and their disciplines the best, and you need to target and tailor, I should say, the testing and so on with that. But I think we're all agreed. I hope we're all agreed that we're not calling for people to go back to the bad old days of sex testing, I think, which was a terrible, terrible thing to do, and I'm sure we all agree that that is not the way forward in this situation.”
