Venezuela's electoral council has declared President Nicolas Maduro the winner of the election with more than 51% votes. The result comes despite independent exit polling suggesting opposition candidate, Edmundo González, had captured twice as many votes. Venezuela’s political opposition is rejecting the results calling on the military to intervene.
