The UK government's climate advisers, the Climate Change Committee, say electricity taxes should be shifted away from electricity and more onto gas to incentivize the adoption of green home technologies like heat pumps. Currently, only 1% of UK homes use heat pumps, but the CCC says this needs to increase to 10% by 2030 to meet climate targets. Lowering electricity prices would help boost the uptake of heat pumps. Heat pumps use electricity to provide heating and are more efficient than gas boilers. Still, high electricity costs and taxes do not currently incentivize their adoption over continuing to use gas.
