The Greenfinch is a common bird you might spot in UK gardens. It's about the size of a sparrow but chunkier, with olive-green and yellow feathers. The males are brighter than the females. These birds love seeds and you'll often see them at bird feeders.
Greenfinches make a distinctive wheezing sound when they sing. They build their nests in trees or bushes, usually laying 4-6 eggs. The chicks hatch after about two weeks.
These birds used to be really common, but their numbers dropped a lot because of a nasty disease called trichomonosis. Luckily, they're starting to bounce back now.
Greenfinches don't migrate, so you can see them all year round in the UK. They often hang out in small flocks, especially in winter. If you want to attract them to your garden, try putting out sunflower seeds or nyjer seeds - they love those!
