A man was arrested by police after a resident claims he was threatening a young couple with a "sword".

Police arrived on Union Street, Swindon, just after 1am yesterday (30/06).

A resident on the street said he saw a young couple walking up the street.

He claims he saw a man who also lives on the street walk out of his house with a sword and started to threaten the young couple with it.

The couple continued to argue with the man and called the police.

When the police arrive at the scene the man barricades himself in his house and is arguing with the police through his door.

The police then swarm the house and arrest the man on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and affray and suspicion of class B drugs.

A resident, who doesn't want to be named said: "There is a pub on the end of the street and a young couple was walking down the street when I heard shouting.

"I look out my house and a man comes out with a sword.

"The girlfriend starts crying and is in hysterics and the man with the sword threatens them.

"When the police arrive they are all screaming at the man to get out.

"In the end, they end up storming the property and bring him out in handcuffs."

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police, said: "A man was arrested in the early hours of this morning in Union Street, Swindon, following reports that a person had been seen with a knife.
