Trump privately expressed concerns to his attorney, Evan Corcoran, that turning over potentially classified documents in his possession after a May 2022 subpoena could result in criminal charges. Corcoran made audio recordings of his conversations with Trump where Trump blamed his legal troubles on political enemies and expressed reluctance to allow a review of boxes that later contained classified documents. During one meeting, Trump asked his attorneys if turning over more documents now could be used against him for criminal liability or to make him look bad, and also asked, "Isn't it better if there are no documents?" Prosecutors argue Trump deliberately misled his attorneys in an attempt to obstruct justice and hide classified documents.
