A man has been arrested and the bomb squad called after 'a number of suspicious items' were found at a property during a police raid.

Police said the man, 58, was held on suspicion of offences under the firearms act after they found the items during a warrant at a house in Grimethorpe, South Yorks,.

The army's bomb disposal team has been at the scene in Brierley Road since the incident happened earlier this morning (May 8).

Residents in the street were evacuated and members of the public are advised to avoid the area after all roads within a 100m cordon were closed.

Assistant chief constable David Hartley from South Yorkshire Police said: "Public safety is our top priority.

"We are working together with our partners to build up a full picture of the circumstances surrounding this incident and the suspicious items which have been found.

"This could take some time and we remain grateful to the public for their cooperation, patience and understanding as we carry out this critical work."

Police said residents could be left without access to their properties for around 48 hours.
