1. Swelling - also known as an effusion, is a sign that your knee is trying to protect itself through the production of excessive synovial fluid. This can be due to a chronic problem like osteoarthritis or can happen acutely due to injury.
2. Locking- if your knee is getting stuck or locked in certain positions then this is a sign of a mechanical block to movement in the joint. This is usually due to displaced torn cartilage or a loose body.
3. Instability/ giving way - This is usually a sign of ligament disruption after injury like anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. It can also happen due to torn meniscus tissue.
4. Reduced exercise tolerance -. If you can walk or run as far as you used to due to pain and symptoms in the knee joint then this is a sign there is a problem in the knee.
5. Night pain - Pain in the knee joint at night which disturbs sleep is a sign that the joint is no longer functioning properly and is usually a late sign of significant degeneration.
