Indian film star Rajinikanth cast his vote on Friday (April 19) in Chennai, causing a stir in the polling booth as fans queueing to take part in India's election recognised the celebrity.
The gigantic exercise involving almost one billion voters will be spread over seven phases across the world's most populous country.
It ends on June 1 and votes will be counted on June 4.
