The story: Jed Cooper (Clint Eastwood), a former policeman, is accused by a group of men of killing a man and stealing his livestock. They hang him from a tree, but he is rescued and taken to prison by Marshal Dave Bliss. When the real criminal is found, the judge releases Cooper and offers him... Marshall's job, Cooper accepts the job and begins hunting down the men who hanged him.
