Improvements already seen in Europe's ID.4 model, including a 282-hp engine and 12.9-inch screen, are now being adapted to the Tennessee-built versions
This year's VW ID.4 may not look much different from last year, but don't judge an EV by its steel, glass and plastic cladding. The 2024 version has been usefully upgraded on the exterior, with upgrades to the power output and interior that will make it much more attractive to buyers.
We got a taste of these new upgrades last fall when VW revealed the upgraded ID.4 for Europe, and now North American cars built in Chattanooga, TN are adopting the same modes. The biggest of these is a major power increase from 201 hp (204 PS) to 282 hp (286 PS) in single-engine vehicles. This new output is dangerously close to the 295 hp (299 PS) offered by the old dual-motor AWD ID.4; hence this too was increased to 335 hp (340 PS).
As before, buyers can choose between a 62 kWh or 82 kWh battery pack, but by opting for the smaller one, you miss out on the opportunity to upgrade power rather than settle for the older, less powerful motor. And to give undecided buyers another opportunity to move away from the base car, the 62 kWh models also miss out on the ID.4's other big new feature: the new infotainment screen. Versions with the base battery pack continue with last year's much-criticized 12-inch infotainment system, but 82 kWh models get a 12.9-inch screen with backlit temperature sliders, a more intuitive climate control interface and a better menu layout.
ID.4 is offered in basic, S and S Plus equipment options; the entry-level 62 kWh model comes in at $39,735 plus $1,425 and offers a modest range of 206 miles (332 km). The most affordable single-motor 82 kWh version costs $44,875 and provides 291 miles (468 km) of driving. S models with a large battery have ventilated front seats, while S Plus cars enjoy a Harmon Kardon sound system with a 16-channel amplifier and 21-inch machine-treaded wheels.
