Chris Eubank vs Michael Watson for the vacant WBO world super middleweight title
Date: September 21, 1991
Venue: White Hart Lane, London
Eubank stance: orthodox
Watson stance: orthodox
Just three months earlier, Chris Eubank had made the final defence of his WBO middleweight title, with a majority decision over Michael Watson. His record improved to 28-0 with 16 KOs. Eubank relinquished his title in order to fight for the vacant WBO super middleweight crown. The fight was held at White Hart Lane, the football stadium for Tottenham Hotspur. Watson was a keen supporter of Spurs' North London rivals Arsenal, and Eubank entered the ring wearing a Spurs kit.
Micael Watson felt he had done enough to win his first encounter with Eubank. The judges scored the bout 116–113, 115–113 and 114–114 made it clear the fight had been close. Watson agreed to move up to the super middleweight division and have a third attempt at winning a world title. His first attempt had been to challenge Mike McCallum for the WBA middleweight title the previous year. That fight ended with Watson being stopped in the 11th round.
