George Foreman vs Alex Stewart in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: April 11, 1992

Venue: Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas

Foreman stance: orthodox

Stewart stance: orthodox

George Foreman retired for the first time after his loss to Jimmy Young in 1977. He returned ten years later and a comeback that was regarded as a joke at first, got more attention with each successive knockout win. People began to take Foreman seriously after he knocked out Gerry Cooney in the second round of their fight in 1990. In 1991, after 24 wins and 23 KOs, Foreman challenged Evander Holyfield for the undisputed title. Foreman lost on points, but made Holyfield work hard for the win. With a third round stoppage of journeyman Jimmy Ellis, Foreman won his 70th fight and was 43 years old.

Alex Stewart turned pro in 1986, and won his first 24 bouts, all by stoppage. He stepped up in class and faced Evander Holyfield, who won in the eighth round of a fairly close encounter in the early rounds. After a couple of stoppage wins against journeymen, Stewart lasted less than a round against Mike Tyson. Eight months and one tune up later, Stewart was stopped in the fourth by Michael Moorer. Every time Stewart stepped up in class he lost, this fight was billed as his last shot at the big time.
