US urges more distance for anchoring near California pipelines
Federal officials recommend increasing the distance between undersea pipelines and anchored vessels in Southern California following a 2021 oil spill caused by ships dragging anchors across a ruptured pipeline owned by Amplify Energy during a storm. The October 2021 spill of 25,000 gallons led to beach closures, fisheries disruption, oil-coated birds, and threats to wetlands in Huntington Beach and nearby communities.
