Muhammad Ali defended his undisputed world heavyweight title against Jimmy Young
Date: April 30, 1976
Venue: Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland
Ali stance: orthodox
Young stance: orthodox
Muhammad Ali is probably best known for his trilogy fight with Joe Frazier - The Thrilla in Manilla. Ali won one of the most famous fights in boxing history when Frazier's corner retired their man at the end of the 14th round. Ali had a relatively easy return to the ring a few months later, when he knocked out Jean-Pierre Coopman in five rounds.
Jimmy Young learned to box the hard way - by being thrown in against contenders and trying to survive. This resulted in early losses to Randy Neumann and Earnie Shavers, but Young was a quick learner, and after being stopped in three rounds by Shavers, Young went on a 12 bout unbeaten run, with the best results being a draw against Shavers (that most observers felt Young had clearly won) and a points win over Ron Lyle.
