After Jerry Quarry lost his rematch with Muhammad Ali by seventh round stoppage, he went on a run of six wins. The best results were a seventh round defeat of Randy Neumann, a points win over Ron Lyle and a first round blowout of Earnie Shavers. Quarry then had a rematch with Joe Frazier, which he lost in five rounds. A routine points win over George Johnson was followed by another fifth round loss, this time to Ken Norton. Quarry took 20 months off before his return against Zanon.
Lorenzo Zanon was born it Italy and turned pro in 1973. Most of his early fights took place in Milan. He won 20 of his first 23 bouts, with two losses and a draw. His best results were points wins over Lucien Rodriguez and Alfredo Evangelista. Zanon won most of his bouts on points, and had quite an effective jab. Zanon stepped up in class to face Ken Norton in September 1977, and lasted five rounds.
