The accident that claimed the life of French sidecar pilot César Chanal took place about 15h00 on Saturday, 04 June 2022, during the opening lap of the first Sidecar TT Race. The event was the second race in the program of the 2022 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. The annual motorcycle racing festival returned for the first time in 2022 after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Less than one mile from the starting line, the orange #21 Honda outfit entered by Team 588 and piloted by Chanal with passenger Olivier Lavorel, went out of control and crashed at Ago’s Leap, between the bottom of Bray Hill and Quarterbridge. Both of them were newcomers on the Isle of Man Mountain Circuit, despite having made extensive racing experience in France and abroad. The pairing had been regular competitors in the French F1 and F2 National Sidecar Championships, recording several podium finishes.

The race was immediately paused with full-course red flags raised, and medical personnel and emergency services reached the place of accident. One of the occupants of the wrecked machine had suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Seriously injured, the second competitor was knocked out. He was treated on the roadside and then was taken to Noble’s Hospital in Douglas. Later he was airlifted to the intensive care unit of Aintree Hospital in Liverpool.

An initial identification procedure was done, which resulted in an erroneous identification. Organisers originally named the deceased racer as passenger 35-year-old Lavorel. However, three days later they issued a statement announcing that they had wrong identified the competitor and that pilot Chanal was the victim of the collision. Lavorel was still listed in serious condition and was undergoing treatment.

César Chanal was reported to be the third death in the 2022 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Owing to the tragedy, the first Sidecar TT Race was suspended and the remainder of the day's schedule abandoned. The race was postponed to Monday, 06 June 2022.

Also the second Sidecar TT Race, the final event of the 2022 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy program, held on Friday, 10 June 2022, was marred by a double fatality. The father and son team of Roger Stockton and Bradley Stockton crashed at Ago’s Leap, almost at the same spot as the Chanal-Lavorel sidecar had.

Sadly, almost five months after his accident, also sidecar passenger Olivier Lavorel succumbed to his injuries. After being airlifted to hospital in Liverpool, Lavorel was transferred to a hospital in France in late June. He never recovered and died on Monday, 24 October 2022.

Lavorel's death led the number of deceased competitors in the 2022 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy to be six, equalling the most-ever fatalities from 1970.
